The name Rhodolite probably comes from the Greek word, “rhodon”, meaning rose. Rhodolite tends to be lighter in color than most other kinds of red-garnet (another way of referring to rhodolite).  The mixture of red and violet in rhodolite is very attractive, and purple-red (similar to ruby) is its most sought after color.

Rhodolite has been widely known for thousands of years. Rhodolite is found in jewelry from ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman eras. The famous arkman Noah reportedly used a lantern containing Rhodolite to safely steer his ark through the darkness of night. Many courageous explorers and travelers wore Rhodolite for protection because it was considered a popular talisman and protective stone.
